He's playing with his WHAT?!

This is the reaction I received, followed by lots of laughter when I said to a group of people the other night that Joey was playing with his dinky. Is this only an East coast term? Do YOU know what I'm talking about when I say that?

Matt uses it- so yes, it must be an East Coast term. I had never heard as anything other thank dinky-car, all one word!

Well, I know exactly what it is. But again, I'm from the East Coast. We always call them dinkies.

I just thought it was a generational thing. We called them Dinky-toys not Dinky-cars. Now do you know what a "Dicky" is?

This east coaster knows what a dinkie AND a dickie are.

Dickie = fake top of a shirt, no?

All I know is that I always told my boys to stay in their rooms when they play with their dinkys. It is not something that should be shared.

Dinkytoys is a outdated term, A english company started making toy vechicles made of metal shortly after the first world war, and sold them as DinkyToys. the term reached worldwide acceptance by the 60's, the name is trademarked and changed hands many time until 1980 when matchbox bought the rights. Matchbox has not revitalized the term. So for the East coast to continue using the term is not really a surprise as they tend to hold onto liguistic traditions very strongly.
BTW Dinkies were much bigger in the 30's.

What? Someone didn't know what a dinky was?

LOL.....I know the term, but only because my housemate happens to be from Newfoundland. He did confuse the heck out of me when he first used the word though. What? A kid in your class was playing with his dinky?! Oh my!

As Clare mentioned, I always knew them as Dinky toys growing up.

Yep Dickie is a fake top of a shirt, worn under another shirt/sweater.
