Hop in the truck, we're going to the city!

We went into Yellowknife today. I felt like the country bunkins "all excited to go to the Wal-Mart". It was nice to get out for the day. We started at McDonald's, where we met up with Brad for lunch, and then on a tour of Yellowknife as Brad as the tour guide. For anyone who knows me, I love finding great deals at yard sales and more recently on line. There is an online website here called YKTrader, which is an online bargin hunter. I have been looking for a high chair for Joey, but didn't want to pay a lot of money. Mom and Dad sent up a booster seat for the table for him, which worked, but wasn't safe enough for me to walk away from him while he was in it. Well, a post went on a week ago by a woman who was GIVING AWAY her high chair! I was quick to email her, and she was kind enough to hang onto it for me until today. We told Brad her address, and he assured us that he knew where it was. We parked outside house 48, which was her house number, and I was very dissapointed when no one answered the door. I rang the bell, knocked on the door, walked around to the back (this woman assured me she would be home all day when I called her this morning). Then I hear "Oh wait, we're on the wrong street". THANKS BRAD. Luckily no one was home! LOL. Off we went around the corner to the right house, and I got my high chair. We then proceeded to an art store called "Something of the Midnight Sun" (Help me out Christine, I can't remember the name). From there, off to a Tackle and Bait Shop where Rob nearly needed a quiet moment by himself, and then to Wal-Mart. From there, we went to the Co-Op, which is similar to Sobey's back home. BUT.. they sell PINEAPPLE POP AND BIRCH BEER! For anyone who does not know what this is (and shame on you!) it's the most amazing pop on the planet and made in Newfoundland! You can buy it in Newfie Stores which is where I bought it in Halifax, but in a local grocery market! Right next to Zest Mustard Pickles! I'M IN HEAVEN! We also bought Fraser's Meat Balls for Colby, not something we can get in here. We also bought fresh bbq steaks and a roast. The Northern Store's meats are all frozen, so it will be really nice to bbq some fresh steaks tomorrow night! It was an exhausting day, as it is an hour each way travelling, but well worth it!

It sounds like a lovely day! I can understand the excitement you felt to see products you usually can't find anywhere, it is the same for us when we see something Canadian in Italy (pretty rare, unfortunately!).

I was reading your post and wondering how long the drive was to Yellowknife...and then when you said an hour i almost fell off my chair since I travel an hour (if not more) to work each day and then home again...but I know that it definitely seems a very long time for people that aren't used to it. Sounds like you guys had a great time though!!

Gallery of the Midnight Sun.

Forgot to tell (warn) you. The expensive stuff in there is nice to look at, but you can usually get a better deal just about anywhere else. It's a high-end tourist trap kind of store.

Let me guess, Rob went to Wolverine's?

Why would you be surprised that there are newfie products in the stores? Yellowknife is Newfoundland's third largest city, after Ft McMurray and St Johns!

Newfie products are one thing, you normally see the Purity line.. but it's the first time I've seen the pop. And we only looked in the Gallery, we didn't buy. It's very obviously a tourist trap.

And Tawny, you're right, an hour is not that long of a commute. If you saw the roads you'd see why it's a long trip. The roads up here are not paved in the typical way down there. They lay crushed stone on the road and then oil on top of that. With all the traffic over it, it becomes hard like pavement. But, it's very rough, and there are spots where the road is being repaired so it goes from gravel to big stretches of dirt. And there are HUGE divits in the road, which at some points makes it feel like a roller coaster. Trust me, 100km/hr is the maximum you can go, as you have to slow down so much with the dips and the gravel. Not to mention the bison! :)

Wow, sounds like your truck is going to come in handy up there!! :)

Another thing with our "hour long dive" is that there is not nearly as much traffic and population along the stretch of road we have to travel, the divots are like your frost heaves after the winter, escept there are times when the road actually drops about 8-12 inches for about 6 feet and then back up again. A very stomach upsetting drive :(

I love birch beer! I've only had it a few times since I never see it anywhere.

I did not know that there was pineapple soda in Canada.
